RATIONALE
Learning is about constructing meaning and in order for students to construct meaning and deep understanding of the complex content from various elements in PYP curriculum, we need multiliteracy skills.
In 21st Century, multiliteracy is enhanced and advanced because of technology evolution. However, educators need to make principled changes in the way we think and in the delivery of our content. It is time for teachers to take advantage of those aspects of changing technologies and begin using digital tools through effective strategies to enhance the learning environment with the most appropriate applications.
Some aspects covered in the workshop:
1. What does it mean to be multiliterate educators?
The workshop will reveal the definition and understanding of multiliteracy to improve student’s learning and how it is relevant with or even enhancing the delivery of PYP curriculum.
2. The use of technology to enhance the learning skills
The workshop model effective strategies for responding to issues in the academic environment including the use of technology and information overload. It also offers some practical sample of how web 2.0. tools can be used more effectively and appropriately in the classroom.
Tuning in
I opened the workshop with video clip below and I asked the
group to convey the meaning of the video by using "Video
Analyzer" worksheet. In the worksheet, I asked the participants to analyze video by looking at three different modes; visual, audio and text modes., which at the same time they were experiencing the multiliteracies itself.
To answer the question "What does it mean to be multiliterate educator?" I used the web 2.0. Go Animate! to help presenting the idea of changing of education and how it's related to multiliteracies. I also explained that GoAnimate is one example that you can use to promote or encourage mutiliteracies, for students to present their knowledge, beside text based. I created this animation below using GoAnimate!

- Definition of multiliteracies
- Multimodality and example of new literacy – relate with previous activity

To get deeper understanding about how multiliteracies can be applied and also what are the consquences that teachers have to go through, I made an online book explaining about the growth of communication using www.storyjumper.com .
From the book the audience were asked to analyze the effects of the changing information and technology using black hat and yellow hats. Later on the discussion lead to the understanding about the the pitfalls of technology, or the problem with the ICT evolution or which we called multiliteracies. You can download the worksheets I used in the workshop at the bottom of this post page.
After the teachers/ participant explained about the positive and negative effects of multiliteracies, we come up with discussion about the what we can do to overcome that pitfalls or problems. Some strategies include managing, processing, and interpreting a constant influx of information, filtering what is useful, and then enhancing the learning environment with the most appropriate applications.
A multiliterate teacher understands the many ways that technology interacts and intertwines with academic and interpersonal life, and actively learns how to gain control over those aspects impacting teaching, social, and professional development.
Reflection
How about us as educator? do you think we are multiliterate and is able to overcome this problem? One video about information overload and the problems with multitasking or multiliteracies was really engaging and thought provoking> terefore I used this to close the session and to underline that even if we have technologies, we as eduator still need to have control over those aspects. When you have too much of good things, sometimes all you need to do is just to UNPLUG!
